Welcome to a Brand New Year

Welcome Back to    !

Welcome to a brand new year in First Grade!  I can't believe it's already the fourth week of school.  We have been so busy learning such new and exciting things.

Here are a few things we have been learning about....

We have been working in our Guided Reading groups. We learned how to use the first letter in a word to help us predict a word that we don't know.  We also check the picture to make sure that the word we predicted makes sense.

We also started an author study on Mo Williems.  His pigeon books are so funny.   We compared the books and made text to text connections.

We are writing just like authors!  We started working in our Writer's Workshop and learning strategies to use to help our writing.  We practiced writing a response after we listen to a story.  Our favorite story was No David! and we loved writing just like David Shannon.  We also created a word wall to keep in our desk to help us spell sight words.

Math is so much fun!  We have been working on the numbers 1-20 and also working on writing these numbers.  We also have been describing sets of objects by saying which number is one more and one less then the set.  We have been enjoying learning new math workstations to practice our number combinations.

We just started our Solids and Liquids unit of study.  This past week, we worked with Solids and learned about the different properties that describe Solids.

We described Solids as being....
  • hard
  • soft
  • smooth
  • rough
  • flexible
  • rigid
We even wrote a book about Solids using these properties.

Social Studies
In Social Studies, we have been learning about school authority figures and good citizens.  We have been reading books and then discussing what qualities make up a good citizen.

Wow!  We sure have been busy.  We can't wait to share some pictures of what we have been doing in First Grade!  Make sure to check back soon.

Texas Rio Star Grapefruit

A few weeks ago the kids and I entered the Texas Rio Star Grapefruit Contest.  This worked perfectly because we have been learning about Texas symbols and the Rio Star Grapefruit is the State Fruit of Texas.

Today I got this in the mail.  I taped it to the door, so that the kids can see it first thing when they walk into the classroom tomorrow.  They have been asking me for weeks if they had won :).

I put the squeeters (or juicers) on their desk along with a bookmark and tattoo.  I will be sending home the directions on how to use the squeeter.  I hope you and your kids get to use them at home.  I know they will be super excited tomorrow.

Synonyms and Antonyms

Last week, the kids and I learned about synonyms and antonyms during our writing lessons.  We are trying to use them to help our writing.  The kids really enjoyed making these antonym books.  First, we made a list of different antonyms.  Dead and alive was their favorite for some reason.  Then we drafted our sentences, edited them, and then completed our books.  We even added a table of contents and bold important words to help us review our nonfiction conventions.

The kids writing is improving so much.  I'm so proud of all of their hard work!

Contraction Caterpillars

We have been busily working on contractions over the last few weeks.  The kids have been noticing that we find a lot of contractions in the books that we read.

Here are some of the contractions caterpillars that the kids made to help us remember our contractions.

The kids picked three contractions and wrote them on their circles.  Then they thought of the two words that make up the contraction and wrote the two words on the caterpillar's legs.

The kids really enjoyed making their consonant caterpillars.  We are hanging them in our classroom to help us remember the contractions as we continue to read our favorite books.
